NON-SURGICAL PERIODONTAL THERAPY: FROM INITIAL ADVANCED INSTRUMENTATION THROUGH MAINTENANCE CARE

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Define the short and long term goals of nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
- Explain the limitations of calculus removal and the expectations for clinician proficiency.
- Discuss the advantages and limitations of manual and ultrasonic instrumentation.
- Select advanced instruments that are appropriate for root instrumentation.
- Explain the indications and use of antimicrobial adjuncts to nonsurgical therapy, including patient products for home care.
- Describe the maintenance protocol for implant patients.
- Recognize the implant failure and other complications related to implant care.
- Evaluate the dental hygienist’s role in the treatment of the periodontal patient.
