NON-SURGICAL PERIODONTAL THERAPY: FROM INITIAL ADVANCED INSTRUMENTATION THROUGH MAINTENANCE CARE

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Define the short and long term goals of nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
  • Explain the limitations of calculus removal and the expectations for clinician proficiency.
  • Discuss the advantages and limitations of manual and ultrasonic instrumentation.
  • Select advanced instruments that are appropriate for root instrumentation.
  • Explain the indications and use of antimicrobial adjuncts to nonsurgical therapy, including patient products for home care.
  • Describe the maintenance protocol for implant patients.
  • Recognize the implant failure and other complications related to implant care.
  • Evaluate the dental hygienist’s role in the treatment of the periodontal patient.
