Dr. Faber will be speaking on clinical implications of common medications used today. He will discuss blood thinners, bisphosphonates, and other new medications that we need to be aware of along with their contraindications and effects.

Dr. Johnston attended Michigan State University to major in Microbiology. He received his DDS in 1982 and a Masters Degree in Periodontology in 1986 from the University of Michigan. He has been an instructor in the Departments of Operative Dentistry and Oral Diagnosis/Radiology at The University of Michigan. He also spent 2 years as an Assistant Professor at Nagasaki University in Nagasaki, Japan. Dr. Johnston is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy and International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is past president of the Macomb Dental Society and the Michigan Periodontal Association. He currently serves on the executive committee for the Michigan Dental Association and is a past Delegation Chair to the American Dental Association. Dr. Johnston is chair of the AAP-ADA Liaison Committee and is the State and Regional Assembly Representative for Michigan to the American Academy of Periodontology. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and has lectured extensively on the topics of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. He is a certified dental editor and is the past Editor of the Journal of the Michigan Dental Association. He is the Immediate Past- President of the Michigan Dental Association. Dr. Johnston is president of Periodontal Specialties LLC, a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. He is also on the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry and is a staff surgeon at Henry Ford –Macomb Hospital. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Discuss the current diagnostic classification and diagnostic criteria for periodontal diseases Review the etiology and pathophysiology of periodontal loss and co-morbid factors Explain the truth about Perio-systemic relationships Present current standards of care, along with an evidence based critique of the common misconceptions and treatment fallacies associated with the periodontal diseases
