December 2015

Check out our new logo! I like how it is combined, rather than two separate logos pushed together. We are a tripartite association, which means, each of us belongs to ADHA~MDHA and our chosen component. I’m working on creating the component logos, expect them next month. Speaking of components-restructuring was a difficult task! Thankfully, most of the hard work is done and we are finishing up the details that will allow our association to flourish. It is the hope that by combining forces, members will share the work that is done at the component level rather than a few people carrying the load. Ask how you can help. Talented in IT? Love to plan parties? Organizational skills? A WOOing personality? Don’t worry about what you may be lacking-find your strengths and share them! www.strengthsfinder.com

President’s Message

While traditions need to be cherished, change advances our profession. As I write this message, I reflect upon our recent House of Delegates (HOD) meeting and the traditions that we held fast to and the advances that were made. An inspiring Mega Issues discussion kicked off the weekend, led by ADHA past president Denise Bowers. We came to together to recognize issues that are important to our members, realized our short comings and offered up solutions. I remember the excitement and encouragement of the weekend. There was positive energy and a wonderful sense of unity. Great leadership skills were witnessed, inspiring professionalism displayed from our student delegates and the enthusiasm for the future of dental hygiene in Michigan was all around us. Dedicated member delegates were prepared, respectfully disagreed, and realized that together is how we become a resilient association with a powerful voice. Many hands make light work! We Lifted Our Spirits, as a show of support for IPP Mielke and also made significant donations to the MDHA PAC.

A special thank you to my DH family for taking care of my family during the installation, answering “my ask” to participate in the installation, stepping out of your comfort zone, helping with last minute things added to making the day a very special event! I was over the rainbow, when my UM DH3 students surprised me by dressing and acting the part of the munchkins. I asked them to come out when called and they took it to the next level! Thank you to all the students who participated in HOD. Please share the information that you learned with your classmates, community and your instructors. MDHA is here for you.

Love, Glinda

During my presidential acceptance speech, I spoke about participative leadership. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy in working towards achieving her personal goals as well as the goals of her teammates. This style of leadership is based upon their ability to each have a sense of ownership and accountability for the success of the Association. As a MDHA member, YOU are on the team and the success of MDHA is depending on your participation.
